Reflection T1-T4

Term 1:In term 1 our class went to camp at Spencer park, I really enjoyed it and had to make food with my group. We also did surfing which was really fun because I don't go much.

Term 2:In term 2 I did girls self defense, which was probably one of my highlights. We had weekly sessions with Lynda.

Term 3:In term 3 ,I went to adrenaline forest with a group of kids in my class.I learnt how to use a harness and use the clips.I found it really fun but embarrassing when I let go of the handle for the zip line.

Term 4:In term 4 I went sailing at Lake Rua, I had never gone sailing before and learnt a lot.I found it quite embarrassing when I tipped over the boat because, I let go of the rope.

Jelly Park

On Friday my class went to Jelly Park.It was really sunny and we had to apply sunblock quite often.

I really enjoyed the hydro-slides, I went down with my friend Isla first. She was at the front and it was really funny cause she get soaked at the end of the slide and, I was barely wet.The other hydro-slide was done singly. So I raced Isla down.I noticed that if you pointed your toes then  the water didn't splash up at your face. When I hit the water I bounced across and it was really funny.

I good dressed slightly early and watched people jump off the diving board. Bluebell and I yelled out to our friend Lewis and told him to belly flop.It was really funny.

I think that it was a nice way to spend the day with my class, especially because its nearly the end of year.

Maths-Tessellation

Today in maths we worked on tessellations. I know that certain shapes tessellate and some don't. If there are gaps on the page then the shape doesn't tessellate or fit into itself. I have tried rectangles, arrows, equilateral and right angle triangles. It is much easier to use the computer than to draw and cut it with a scissor.

One word speech

For the year 8 formal each student had to make a small speech based on one word that described our experience at Rawhiti.

This is my speech:

Hi my name is Kirsten my word is confidence.

I chose this word because when I first started at Rawhiti, I didn't have a lot of confidence.

But coming into Tangaroa, I got given a lot of opportunities to push myself, such as

leading assemblies, running choice and challenge, and  discos.

Because of the encouragement and support of teachers and classmates I feel more confident heading into the future.

Maths - Rotate

For math's we have been rotating around a point.Today we went on a site called geometry rotation.

Which had a bunch of quizzes for us to do.I think these helped me have more understanding of what we are learning about.

Pobble.

This is my pobble questions.I still need to draw a picture and writing my story.
Where is the pup’s mother?Went to find food for her young pup

What animal is she?Seal (what kind?)

What might she have learnt already from her mother? How to stay camouflaged and away from predators trying to eat her.She is still learning some of the basics.

How old is the pup? 6 months old.

Do you remember learning to swim? What were the biggest challenges you had to overcome?I had to learn to keep myself afloat and hold my breath.I found I struggled with breaststroke the most because of the way you had to move your legs like a frog.

How is it that some animals are better swimmers than others? Some animals are made for swimming, like otters that have skin that allows them to stay dry. There are other animals like fish that have to stay in water because they have gills.

How do you think it would feel to swim in that water? For me it would be cold but it will possibly be warmer for seals because they have fur that helps them.

Can you use relative clauses to add extra information to a sentence using who, which, where, when, whose or that?
E.g. The pup, who was only a few days old, prepared for the icy plunge.
Her fur was white like the snow she was lying upon.
The water was turquoise.

Puzzle

For one of our AMP projects I did a word search on native birds.I tried to make it so it would fit the age group 7-9.

Kea                    Tui                 Kiwi              Fantail        Kakapo            Weka

    Silvereye              Fernbird Bellbird       Whio

Handwriting

Everyday after we do the hui in our class,we start handwriting.
Mr Redmond writes up one of his dad jokes and we have to link the writing.
We also have to make sure we use correct punctuation and full stops.
I think this has helped me a lot with learning to link and writing faster because I have always found it slightly difficult to link certain letters.
Today's joke was...
"I've decided to sell the vacuum cleaner."
"Its just collecting dust."

Octagonal Pyramid

This is a Octagonal Pyramid it has:-

9 faces

9 Vertices

16 edges

It was already pre-made and I had to cut it out and fold along the dotted lines. I had to use tape in the end to stick it together.

10 tips on becoming a year 8

1. Don't be embarrassed to put your hand up and ask a question

2.Clean your own mess otherwise the whole class gets punished and EVERYONE blames you

3.Take every opportunity you, even if you don't think its your things it still worth a try

4.Skipping class to do jobs isn't worth it because you miss important lessons

5.People don't think its cool to talk back or use poor language

6.Don't leave your work for the end of the week. You'll have to stay behind while your friends do things like choice and challenge.

7.Don't talk while the teacher is talking there is plenty of time to do that.

8.Make sure you have your equipment organised!

9.Be aware that your not a year 7 anymore and there will be slight changes in what the teachers expect from you

10.Have fun because its your last year at primary school.(Just enjoy it)

Maths-Constructing

Today we had to design a net and construct a squared pyramid:

I found that I should've made the flaps slightly bigger so it was easier to glue together.

I did the base as 4cm and the sides as 6cm.

Maths-Polygons

We are focusing on the properties of a polygon.

A polygon must be 2D, must be made up of all straight lines , no intersecting lines and all points must be touching ( No gaps). This diagram shows how I sorted what weren't polygons. Some polygons intersect but these are called complex polygons and somehow this contradicts its own rule, I think.

Manners help the world

Manners.....

Having good manners isn't just respecting your elders its respecting everyone.Manners help the world in may ways example, they teach people to respect and treat others how they want to be treated.Children should be taught manners at a young age so they have a good understanding about manners.Having manners can be as simple as saying hello to someone or opening the door for someone.A example of bad manners would be to do the opposite example....Ignoring someone when they talk to you.I think that having good manners can also get you further in life because, you have respect for others and aren't selfish. When someone says hello to you they are trying to be nice and inviting,so saying hello back would be polite and make them happy back.

Trying to see the funny side of things is great because it helps everyone notice that mistakes happen and they aren't going to change who you are.Being honest is something everyone should do because once you lie once no-one believes you and you aren't trusted.

I like people with good manners because they are fun.But people with bad manners are somewhat mean and aren't always the funnest to be around.Kindness also makes everyone feel better.

Some simple ways to start having good manners are...

1.Complimenting people, not just about they way the look or their new shoes. But it could be complimenting them about how nice or bubbly they are

2.Talking ,I think communication is under estimated.Being able to talk to someone is always great. It can also be as simple as good morning or have fun.

3. Understandment , having the ability to understand what others are going through is great. Also not judging them by their choices and thinking through why they have made a decision.

4.Accepting your own mistakes, noticing that you are wrong in a situation is good because it means you are focusing on points someone else has made and not focusing on what you have to say.

5. Positivity, being positive is great because you aren't focusing on the negative which makes everyone happy.

6.Respect ,respect is very important especially if you want to get far in life.

7. Integrity ,because dependable and following through with commitments,Integrity is also being honest.Honesty is also something that can get you a far way in life

Manners can also make you into a better person,so start using them!

Cryptic Crossword

For literacy we had to do a cryptic crossword

The answers our found inside the question example: A mine in a steep Italian mountain.

Writing

For our writing sample or topic was:It is wrong to fight.

This is mine

It is wrong to fight…

What is fighting? Fighting is basically when two or more people punch each other or physically attempt to hurt each other. Personally I think that fighting isn't okay because someone can get hurt or majorly injured.Fighting can be okay if you are defending your-self what I would class that as self-defence because you aren't purposely trying to hurt someone you're just attempting to keep your-self safe.

How many people report fighting or being in a fight?

In 2017, about 18 percent of students reported having been in a physical fight anywhere 1 to 3 times, 4 percent reported having been in a physical fight anywhere 4 to 11 times, and 2 percent reported having been in a physical fight anywhere 12 or more times. This may of changed because this study was done in 2017 but I think it is still a lot but has improved because there was quite a few if we were to travel back into 1990.

Why are more males in a physical fight versus females?

Due to many studies there is a nearly double percentage difference in male to female fighting.

In 2017, 30 percent of males reported physical fighting, compared with 17 percent of females being in a physical fight. This may be because males find it harder to control their anger or possibly feel tougher if they fight others. But what if a female had a male body build would it change who fights more? I think this could be true because male think that they are tough and strong which makes them want to prove themselves worthy of it.

Fighting in schools...

Though most schools report at least one violent crime per school year, serious violent crimes at schools occur in far fewer schools. In 2014 about 13 percent of public schools reported one or more serious fighting incidents to the police. Overall, school crime has decreased since the early 1990s.I think that the violence could have decreased because of less gangs aren't so popular these days. There are many ways to try and prevent a fight like using verbal commands or possibly schools could work on anger management and help the student make connections with other students at a younger age. This might be able to help them in a future fight.

Fighting should be okay and kids should be taught at a young age.Fighting shouldnt be encouraged because the people think it is trendy or cool, which will make fighting increase.

Analysis of script

In our literacy group we have been looking at how authors and directors tell stories about characters. We all noticed how they deliberately used stereo-types for their viewers so can make connects easily.

Blue= Speech  Yellow= Appearance  Red= Actions  Green=Environment

After I had Bluebell / Azania go through my groups script by highlighting.I noticed that we forgot to add detail about our character and noticed we could've added more about the environment.I do think that my group worked well with speech and actions.

Story Start:

A cramp starts to prickle up my arm and I shake it, trying to get rid of the pain. The noise of students chattering is a noisy blur as I return to my essay. A tall girl with dark brown curls cascading down her back kicked my foot and I wince, rubbing my toe. “Hahaha” the girl sniggered, smirking down at me,

“Look at Katie-pie, the loner”

I glance at her quickly then train my gase back to the ground.

Her friend rolls her eyes, “Come on Mia, she’s not worth our time”. With a last seething glance Mia stalks away with her friend in tow and I lose them in the crowd in seconds, though just before the door at the end of the corridor closes, I can just here the yell of “Lovey, lonely loner”

I bit my lip and tried to ignore the burn in my eyes. I glance back down at papers in my hand and the title in big writing, ‘Hemiptera in the Rainforest’.

“ They're, hemiptera, 7.6 million per square meter” I gobble midlessley, getting a few weird glances from the last of the students leaving but I'm used to it by now. I glance up when a pair of green and brown spotty shoes stop in front of me. “Himph, here we go” I mutter under my breath and pretend to not notice her standing there.

“Kate, Kate” Miss Darins says softly but I keep my eyes down and continue scribbling on the paper. “Kate, love are you alright?”

“Mmm yep, fine” I say, not really paying attention.

She bends down so she is crouched beside me and I get hit by a wave of perfume. “Where are all your friends”

I frown and glance away, watching the last few stranglers as they push through the double doors.  “Don’t have any”

“Oh darling” The teacher breaths right in my face and I push back against the wall, skewing my face up slightly. “I can find you some”

Oh because teachers were for finding people friends. I clench my hands to force myself not to roll my eyes.

“My books are all the matters to me” I say, my mind wandering. “Anyway I should keep studying”

A look of maybe hurt or confusion flashed across her face but she quickly re Reuters to her normal expression. “Right and I have to get to a meeting” She stands up and flattens her already flat skirt. “Bye Kate” She says in a clipped voice then hurriedly walks down the hall, disappearing into one of the class rooms.

Maths-Tangram Builder - Immersion- Geometry

Today we did Tangrams, these are some that I managed to finish. We learnt that moving the pieces into place required rotation, flip and slide to get them there. Some shaped I have to rotate 90 degrees and others just needed to be flipped around (180 degrees)

Healing garden/Science

For inquiry I worked with my friend Clara. We decided to do the healing garden.

This was our design we had certain things under the shade because of the amount of sunlight they need to grow and things like the lemon tree don't need any shade. On the side we put the exact amount of water and sunlight needed to grow.

These are some things I knew about healing garden already...

Aloe Vera helps with sunburn, Garlic helps with your cough and Turmeric which helps with high cholesterol (not all of this is suitable for everybody)

I learnt afterwards that..

Snake plant helps with the air/oxygen nature ,Kava helps with stress and anxiety(relaxing plant) and Echinacea is used to help prevent common colds.

Do you know any plants that help with healing?

Domain opening

Yesterday a group of kids in my class were chosen to go to the Rawhiti domain

When we arrived we were asked to play a game of all in tag with the other schools

Once Jacinda Arden arrived when sat down and listened to the stuff people were talking about(the structure of the building etc)

I really enjoyed it and got Jacinda's signature

My essay on the elements that authors and directors use

 INTRO:

Authors and directors like to use stereotypes to help the viewers/readers make connections with the characters, by using things like their clothing they are wearing to simple things like an action they do. By this I mean the authors/directors do these deliberately and will always have a reason for what they are wearing and doing.

COSTUME:

The costume can be used to show personality and sometimes their background behind the scenes. For example Ron in Harry Potter, he was wearings mucky hand me down clothing suggesting that his family isn't wealthy or doesn't get new clothes very often ,but Hermione is wearing her school robe and has neat and tidy clothes suggesting she likes to be organised and she could be wealthier than Ron or doesn't get hand me downs. Costumes are also used as a stereo-type,like if someone was wearing black they are considered mean but if someone wears yellow they are considered nice and happy. They also wear glasses to make them seem smarter or show wisdom.

ENVIRONMENT

The environment gives you clues where the character(s)are.

They also use objects in the scene that also give hints of where they are.Example if you see  desks and books that suggest that they are in a classroom, but if you were to see a large willow tree and swings it would suggest a park or maybe even a backyard.

SOUNDS:

Sounds are used so the audience can easily interact with what they are watching. For example being able to hear what the character is saying or what is going on in the background ,like in  a classroom you would hear kids talking.Sounds can also help you have an idea of where they are especially in a book because you don't have the visual image.

ACTIONS:

Actions are important in movies and books because it helps give ideas about the character.Like if someone slams the door it shows they are angry,if someone is bouncing around it tells you that they are excited or happy. The director will always have a reason why the character deliberately does something.  Like when Snape comes into the classroom he makes his presence clear by walking into the class and having a strong and loud voice as he talks.

CONCLUSION:

Everything ,even small things  are deliberate in a movie and a book because it ends up letting you make connections with the character.

What we did today

Today our class had skiing but for the people who didn't go had a fun day(well less work)

Our time table

We started by doing our Hui then moved onto science I am doing a healing garden , then we did a kahoot

After break/eating we the class did a quizlet (a quiz done on our chrome-books that gives us a couple of people to work with and complete a quiz with) Which I didn't do cause I had netball training. At netball training we worked on passes, shooting and team building skills after that we finished with a small games.

After that (right now) we had to write a blog about our day so we could go to dodge-ball

I am enjoying my day so far what have you guys been doing today or in the past week?

Maths-Algebra

Today we worked on linear equations and we graphed our co-ordinates and ordered pairs. We graphed our work onto a Cartesian Plane. It was an introduction to working on a plane that had negative numbers and to get us familiar with plotting negative co-ordinates.

This was my graph

Science

Today we focused on how often our healing plants should be watered

  • Chamomile - make sure to water extremely in dry periods and water, does not require lots of water.Only water when dry.

  • Echinacea - needs 1 inch of water a week to grow healthy,If the coneflower doesn't receive enough water it will die.Water plant with soaker hose once a week

  • Lemon ginger - Ginger needs a lot of moisture when growing , soil should never dry out but don't overwater.Water once per week but deeply.Lemons should be water every 5 days or when the soil is dry to touch 2-3 inches below the surface.

  • Green tea - Camellia Sinensis likes to be deeply watered about twice a week rather the being watered shallowly.

Visual prompts

I rush onto the cruise carrying my suitcase and holding
my blue umbrella above my head trying to avoid getting hit by the rain.I
enter my cabin and start to unpack as I feel the boat starting to move.
I lean onto my bed that is neatly prepared for me and  start to go to sleep.
THUMP!
I wake up to see my-self lying on the wooden floor.I attempt to stand up and take
a look out-side my cabin realizing that everyone is gone.I rush towards the front
of the cruise , to see everyone lining up ready to leave on the small red boats.
I go to line up but the boat tips and I slip off the edge trying to catch my-self but
my hand loses hold of the metal bar.
SPLASH!
I feel my-self sinking lower and lower as I hit the water. The waves pushing me
under everytime I try and pull my-self above the .I try to stay calm and push
forwards again hoping that I can get above the water to take a breath.
My arms pull against the water and I slowly rise up.I put my hand into a
fist as punch through the rough crest of the blue waves.I feel the cold air
go through my hand as the water rushes down.I have a moment of excitement
but I still need to get out of the water.I start yelling at the top of my lungs, hoping
that someone will hear me and pull me out of cold water. It has been nearly two minutes
and the waves are getting bigger.”I haven't got long” I say to myself.I try one
last time using the last of my energy.
I count down in my head “3 , 2 ,1 HELP!” I wait patient and then see a group
of people rush towards me on one of the small boats. The pull me onto the
boat and start to dry my-self with the white towel but it doesn't do much so
I wait until we reach shore. They take me to the green ambulance so I get
medical attention.I am all clear.

But they say I just need to take it easy and rest for a bit

Maths / Graphing

This week we did some work on graphing
I learnt that when you number the graph you number it on the line so when you mark the dot on  the graph it isn't on the middle of the graph and it lines up ( get the right answer)
The X axis goes horizontally and the Y axis goes vertically

Examining from texts

Harry potter - Snape

1A Snape movie version
These first impressions show the character is…
He seemed like a mean teacher because he stormed into the room aming his presence clear (doesn't want to muck around) .
He also was wearing black which makes him seem mean and villainy because of the stereo-type in other movies
Picks favourites (Doesnt treat all the kids the same)

1B Snape book version
The book is slightly different from the movie because
The roll count wasn't done in the movie
THe described his reaction differently to what he did in the movie ( His lips curled into a sneer)
You got a bigger picture about him ( the connection he has to potions) because of the description

Healing garden / Inquiry

Over the last two days Kirsten and I have been working on our healing garden
as part of our science. We have decided to do our healing garden all with ingredients
to make some lovely teas. These are the teas we have chosen so far: German Chamomile
tea (Chamomile tea helps with calm people and help with sleep) ,
Echinacea tea (This tea is used to help protect against the common cold),
Lemon ginger tea (It helps with colds and sore throats )
Green tea (Helps with lowering the risk of heart disease and helps protect against cancer.
It also helps your brain to function )
. These teas each help with different things and are all very nice to drink.
We have found out about what each tea is made out of and learned about how to plant those
plants. We hope to add some more teas in future but for now we have to research some more
about the teas we have so we can plan where and how to plant them in our garden.

Inquiry

Today we started doing inquiry
We had the choice to choose from
1.Bird garden (Help the native birds/Bird houses etc)
2.Vegetable garden (Make a vegetable garden the can provide food for a family through out a year)
3.Healing garden (Stuff/plants that help with healing)

I decide to work in a pair with my friend Clara, we chose to do the healing gardens
We are focusing on teas and the plants the are used in them
Next session we are going to research about teas that help with healing or protecting colds

Visual prompts

I wake up to hear a chanting parade with large signs, saying black lives matter.
I am so confused what is all this about.”No daa black lives matter it is just a different skin color”I say
to myself.I decide to go out-side and ask one of the people holding a sign what this is all about.
They look at me as I am total idiot , a man sighs and start to explain about this guy, that was
killed because he was black.I am still confused what is it with all this black people stuff.
I decide to research about this and make a article about it.I start with reading news articles, well
there isn't much information apart from these parades and signs.I think that it would be a good idea
to ask some of my family elders and see if they have any information about all this black lives matter
stuff.I decide to ask my Grandad first,he talks about how in his day all the black people couldn't go
on a bus and had to attend black people schools. My face drops…

“What is wrong with people”I mutter to my-self

I get my pens out and start to write my article.

Black lives matter…

I think that black lives matter because it is just a different skin color and that all people should be treated with respect not just white people. They still have the same ability as us white people and have a awesome culture if people were just to explore it.My question to the public is how would you like to be treated because it isn't a great feeling to be judged by your color.

I reread my article making sure my spelling is correct.I hand it to my Grandad asking what he thinks of it.He gave it a thumbs up and said I should show it to my class of my writing topic on Friday , I said I would consider it.
It's Friday as I walk into the classroom. I sit on my wooden chair and neatly pile the article on the desk in front of me.Everyone starts to be called up by alphabetical order,Abby,Benji,Carla...
My name starts with a T for Tess.As the time passes by I completely forget about reading my article and all the butterflies in my stomach disappear like clouds.
Tess! Your turn , I can feels my heart beating as I stand up and walk to the front of the class.I start to introduce my topic but my throat goes dry.I calmly take 5 deep breathes and look up and then down the the article. Here goes nothing..
Hi I am going to be reading my article about black lives matter.

Black lives matter…
I think that black lives matter because it is just a different skin color and that all people should be treated with respect not just white people. They still have the same ability as us white people and have a awesome culture if people were just to explore it.My question to the public is how would you like to be treated because it isn't a great feeling to be judged by your color

“CLAP CLAP CLAP” The class claps
I sit back down on my chair with a big smile on my face...

Visual prompts

This is my story for visual prompts
If I was to write about this visual prompt again I would make it more exciting :)

I look up at the night sky admiring the full moon.I decide to count the glimmering stars.”1,2,3…”
I start to yawn as I hear a echoing howl ,my body jumps in fear.I try to be as quiet as a
mouse trying to get in-side without attracting attention to myself.Once I make it in-side
I race through the cottage locking all the doors.I start to calm down and peer out the
small window in the bedroom.I look out-side but I can't see anything. The howls are getting
louder and I start to panic in fear again hiding under the large knitted blanket by grandma
made me.The howling stops and I come out from under the blanket…
I turn my head and yawn as I sit up noticing I am still on the grass out-side the cottage.
”What! how am I out-side”.I say to my-self trying to think of an explanation.
Where did the wolf go and  the howling I cant have imagined all that I think to my-self curiously.

Surely it wasn't a dream,it can't have been…

Do you guys have any suggestions that I can change about my story?

Visual writing

BANG!
The guns start to fire and grenades are thrown.A bullet hits me right in my stomach.I collapse onto the ground and try to crawl through the vibrant red poppies that are covering the battle field.I am losing blood fast.I continuous repeat to crawl as quickly as I can but I can feel my-self slowing down.”Gotta keep going” I now start to say as my body starts to tremble and I get a cold shiver go through my spine.
My eyes suddenly close and all I can see is black...

Maths - Area

This week we have been working on area.
We had to remember to write down our method and all our working so our teacher Nogo knew what we did wrong so he could help us next time or correct our mistake.

To work out the area of a shape you times the length by the width
Example:
If the length of a rectangle was 6m and the width was 3m
You would then times them together (6 times 3 = 18m2)
(Since we are working out area it is square metres)

Area of a circle

This week we have been working on area and writing down our method and all of our working so we could go back and correct what we did wrong and our teacher Nogo could see what we need to work on.

To work out the area of a circle you have to times the the radius twice with π
π = 3.14

Example :
If the radius of a was 5m
So would would then start by multiplying the radius twice = 25m
Then multiply that with π (3.14)
25m times 3.14 = 78.5m2

visual prompts

This is my favorite visual prompt.
The boy rolls out of his blankets as he sees something starting to shimmer underneath him.
The room suddenly lights up as the carpet is brought to life.
The boy's eyes glow with excitement as the carpet lifts its-self into the air.
The dog spins around in the sparkles that float off the magic carpet.
The boy picks his dog up and they fly around the room all night.
